Invitation from the ABA Practice and Procedure under the NLRA Committee

The annual regional meeting of the ABA Practice and Procedure under the NLRA Committee (P&P Committee) will be held on November 1, 2011 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the law offices of PAUL HASTINGS, LLP, 600 Peachtree Street (Bank of America Plaza), Suite 2400, Atlanta, Georgia 30308. The P&P Committee focuses on procedural labor law issues that arise in the representation and unfair labor practice process. Because this is the only regional meeting the Committee holds during the year, we encourage you to attend and learn more about the Committee’s activities. Those unable to attend in person are invited to participate via video conference at the Board’s regional offices in Tampa, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico or via telephone using the following access number 1-800-308-2601 and passcode 2123186278.

The November 1 meeting will include:

  • A presentation by three area Regional Directors (Atlanta, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico) and on Regional issues and initiatives, including a Q&A session with them.
  • A discussion of procedural issues and problems that practitioners have encountered over the past year in their practice before the Board. A list of these issues will be presented to the Acting General Counsel and Board Members for response at the P&P Committee’s mid-winter meeting.
  • A discussion of possible  topics for papers and presentations at the P&P Committee’s mid-winter meeting.

We hope that you will be able to attend the meeting and become involved in the Committee’s activities this year. If you are not able to attend, please encourage another attorney from your office to do so. In this regard, the ABA and our Committee are particularly interested in diversity on the Committee and, thus, we appreciate your efforts to encourage minority or female attorneys to attend the meeting.

Please RSVP by email to toddduffield@paulhastings.com at your earliest convenience. We look forward to seeing you on November 1.

Section Update

The Section welcomes its new chair for 2010-11, Jill Schwartz of Winter Park. Jill brings a wealth of leadership experience and employment law expertise to the Section as head of her ten lawyer employment law firm, former Florida NELA president, and a member of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. This year’s dedicated officers also include chair-elect Greg Hearing of Tampa, secretary/treasurer Sherril Colombo of Miami, legal education director Bob Turk of Miami, and immediate past chair, Eric Holshouser of Jacksonville.

The Section capped off a productive year under Eric Holshouser’s leadership at The Florida Bar’s Annual Meeting in June. The year included a full slate of CLE programs, scholarship awards for law students, robust and informative publications, and outreach to the judiciary, local bar associations, and Section membership. Eric thanked the Executive Council for their hard work during his term as chair and expressed special appreciation to Don Ryce and Marc Snow, who stepped down from the Executive Council after years of dedicated service. The Section also recognized Stephanie Williams Ray as Volunteer of the Year.

The Section promises another exciting year ahead. First up is the 36th Annual Public Employment Labor Relations Forum. This seminar will be held on September 23-24 in conjunction with The Florida Bar’s Midyear Meeting at the Hilton Orlando. Our second live seminar, When Summary Judgment Fails….Evidentiary Issues in Employment Cases, will be held on October 29 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. Information about both of these seminars can be found on this website. Of course, there will be other great programs throughout the Bar year including the return of our webinar series, our annual Certification Review Seminar and Advanced Labor Topics Seminar, and a Tallahassee CLE program geared toward government lawyers. All in all, the Section is poised for another outstanding year and we look forward to the involvement of all our membership in our programs and activities.
